Description

The Dance Education Intern will learn how to adapt teaching ballroom or modern dance to adults with developmental disabilities and blindness with the goal of helping them to gain artistic technique and enhanced skills and, over the long term, become a dancer. The intern’s primary responsibility will be to shadow and assist a dance instructor in the classroom who has expertise in ballroom or modern dance, as well as experience working with people with disabilities. This position will prepare the intern for jobs that bring their art to people of differing abilities and encourage inclusivity - such as teaching an adaptive dance class in a school - while exposing them to the unique artistic perspectives and styles of TLC clients. The intern will work 20-30 hours a week from July - December.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have experience in and a passion for ballroom or modern dance. They will be patient, kind, and enthusiastic about engaging people of differing abilities in the artistic process. 

Background

Founded in 1975, Therapeutic Living Centers for the Blind (TLC) is the only organization in the San Fernando Valley that specializes in serving adults who are challenged by both blindness and a developmental disability. We believe in the value of each individual and promote the philosophy that each participant can be assisted to achieve his or her full potential. Core programs, which annually reach approximately 130 unduplicated individuals, include residential care in 12 homes and day programs for adults and seniors.
