Description

The Community Engagement Intern will work closely with the Cultural Arts Coordinator to research, plan, and implement a social media strategy for promoting the South Gate Civic Center Museum collection and programs. This position requires considerable online research, a sense of creative marketing, and the ability to synthesize information into short engaging posts. The intern will focus on employing creative methods to activate and increase access to the Museum’s collection of over 2,000 unique objects related to the history of South Gate. Responsibilities will include photographing and writing short captions about each object, as well as developing creative methods for engaging the public. Towards the end of their internship they will be asked to develop and facilitate a public program inspired by their research. This position will work approximately 32/hr week from June through September.

Qualifications

This intern position is ideal for a marketing, history, art history, public relations, communications or other academically well-rounded student. The ideal candidate will have interests and/or experience in community engagement, marketing, social media and/or local history. A high level of oral and written communication skills are mandatory as are basic computer skills including the Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Powerpoint) and fluency with standard social media platforms. Experience with graphic programs Photoshop and/or InDesign is a plus. A bilingual candidate (English/Spanish) is preferred. The best candidate will be eager to learn, resourceful, able to multi-task, adapt to change, and work independently.

Background

Located in the heart of the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area, the City of South Gate is a busy, urban community consisting of residential, commercial, and industrial development. South Gate is known for its outstanding city services, remarkable parks and recreation facilities, and family-friendly environment. In 2020 the City created a Cultural Arts Division, which includes youth and adult arts classes, special events, and programming at the City’s Museum and Art Gallery. Recent Cultural Arts projects include: the City’s first public art installation "Kintsugi Court" by LA artist Victor Solomon, the City’s first virtual exhibit in partnership with Open Walls (a South Gate based artist studio) entitled "Living-Room: In Between Realms," in celebration of Day of the Dead, an annual South Gate Art Walk, and our first Open Call exhibit in the South Gate Gallery "Cuídate/Take Care of Yourself."
