The Outwords Archive (OUTWORDS) travels the U.S. recording interviews with elders of the LGBTQIA+ civil right movement; we then repurpose these interviews to provide wisdom, inspiration, and practical training to young activists. OUTWORDS was founded in 2016. To date, we have recorded 196 interviews in 35 states with LGBTQIA+ trailblazers who mostly came of age in the 1950s and 1960s and are now in their 70s, 80s, and 90s—so it is critically important to capture their stories while they are still alive to tell them. In 2020, OUTWORDS adapted to the Covid shelter-in-place orders by shipping camera kits operated remotely by staff, which now allows us access to interviewees in regions that were previously difficult and costly to visit in person. We continue to conduct a mixture of in-person and remote interviews.
