About the Artwork:

The Friends of the Agoura Hills Library commissioned Denise Jones to paint this mural when the new Library was built in 2001. The mural depicts a sunlit grassy meadow in which deer and other California wildlife appear. Reminiscent of the Hudson River School landscapes and illustrations from early twentieth century children’s books, the image curves along the wall of the library’s children’s section.

About the Artist:

Denise Jones was a 24-year-old student at California State University Long Beach when she won the commission to create a mural for the new Agoura Hills Library. At the time she was also a resident of nearby Thousand Oaks and had painted a mural for a dentist’s office which was brought to the attention of the Library Design Committee. Since the mural’s completion, Denise Jones has studied in Italy at the Accademia di Belle Arti and received an MFA from the New York Academy of Fine Art. In addition to painting, she now teaches art at College of the Desert in Palm Desert, California.
